Kerala – Gods Own Country , Havens of Kerala

Kerala Gods own country which was once a summer capital for Britishers in the Southern part of India , now a major tourist attraction of India. The malabar coast , tea gardens , spice parks and the greenery , all in all as a carpet going from Hills to the sea.

Resently Kerala – Gods own country was designated as one of the best destinations in world for Family holiday in a list which included New york city , Iceland , Denmark , Prague , Italy and Macau.

Very few knows that way back in 2000 Kerala was voted as one of the best places in the world for an enthralling leisure experience by National Geographic Traveller.

The proudness which i felt because of this inclusion of Kerala – God Own Country in the best destination list by lonely planet has made me to come up with this blog about the places or the havens of Kerala gods own country.

HAVENS OF KERALA

1. MUNNAR

MUNNAR - TEA GARDENS
MUNNAR – TEA GARDENS

It is one of the attractions that contributed to Kerala’s popularity as a travel destination among domestic and foreign travellers. Situated at the confluence of three mountain streams – Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala, and perched about 1600 m above sea level, the hill station of Munnar once used to be the summer resort of the erstwhile British administration in south India.

This hill station is marked by vast expanses of tea plantations, colonial bungalows, rivulets, waterfalls and cool weather. It is also an ideal destination for trekking and mountain biking.

Tea Museum – Munnar has a legacy of its own when it comes to the origins and evolution of tea plantations. Taking account of this legacy and to preserve and showcase some of the exquisite and interesting aspects on the genesis and growth of tea plantations in Kerala’s high ranges, a museum exclusively for tea was opened some years ago by Tata Tea in Munnar. This Tea Museum houses curios, photographs and machineries; all of which have a story to tell on the origins and growth of tea plantations in Munnar. The museum is located at the Nallathanni Estate of Tata Tea in Munnar and is worth a visit.

ALLEPPEY BACKWATERS

Coming to the end , Alleppey , but being on end doesnt negate its importance infact for me its the main infact the never never to be missed location of Kerala Gods Own Country.

Alleppey is one of the most important tourist centers in the state, with a large network of inland canals earning it the sobriquet “Venice of the east”. These large network of canals provide Alleppey its lifeline. Alleppey was one of the busiest centers of trade in the past with one of the best known ports along the malabar coast. Even today it retains its charm as the centre for Coir carpet industries and prawn farming. Alleppey the ideal headquarters for backwater tourism as well as for visits to the lovely church filled town of Kottayam, and the town of Aranmula, famous for its historic Aranmula Snake Boat Race which is an annual event.

Alleppey is also known for its spectacular snake – boat races held on the second Saturday of August, every year. This competition – the Nehru boat race takes its name from India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who inaugurated in 1952. It is excitement all around as snake – boats , each manned by over a hundred oarsmen, cut through the waters like wind. The event is a tremendous success with tourists and the local population alike.

The boat cruise along the backwaters of Alleppey give one first hand experience of the life style; toddy tapping, fishing for small fry, Coir-making, prawn farming etc., which remains more or less unchanged over the years.

Heritage Mandawa | Century old Haveli | How about staying here ?

Just went through the archives of my blog and came to know that I forgot to include the best stay I have ever had in my resent concluded Rajasthan tour. Heritage Mandawa , more than a century old haveli now turned into a Heritage hotel. I happen to stay here on my Mandawa visit.

What else i could have expected in my life , day long journey coming from Bikaner travelling around 300 Km in some 6-7 hrs , knees had been paining without finding much of stretch for them , tired of sitting on a seat and last one hour was too bumpy , i was just looking for nice stay to spend my night and start again rejuvenated the next day. Gave a call to my brother and he arranged a stay for me at Heritage Mandawa , thanks for their prompt response.

Heritage Mandawa , more than a century old Haveli

Maiden visit to Mandawa and so to Heritage Mandawa , had heard a lot from my brother who had been here on a family trip a year back.

My driver had told me a bit about this hotel , it was once a haveli of a Marwari family from Rajasthan , built somewhere around 1860. Some years back it was turned into a Heritage Hotel.

My room at Heritage Mandawa

We checked in to our room and for the first time my wife came with response on first look ” Aaaahhh its Awesome ” , bell boy smiling and staring at her and i staring and smiling seeing bell boys look watching my wife clicking the pics from her cell phone and giggling again and again ” wow , its wow this is the best “.

Wish i could have spent some more time at Mandawa and Heritage Mandawa too , but no worries at all i know i am again going to visit them.

Next day we had to check out , they had arranged special Indian breakfast for us as most of other guest’s were foreigners and they were happy with Banana , cornflakes and black tea. Specially for us Heritage Mandawa staff arranged Parantha’s , cheese omlette and toast and all of it was amazing.

It was the checking out time but something was still left , my brother had told that they have renovated two rooms , and had told me to have a look to them.

Sheesh Mahal of Heritage Mandawa

One of that room was Sheesh Mahal or can say a room decorated with glasses. As soon as i had entered into it , i was getting a feeling like i have come to a set of some old bollywood movie like Mughal – e – Azam.

Lounge area of Sheesh Mahal

Just walk into the tiniest of stairs i have ever seen and you enter into this lounge area of Sheesh Mahal , maybe those stairs date back to that time when this Haveli was built and that time stairs width was kept to minimum.

Kamra - e - Nakkashi

Next to enter was the Kamra – e – Nakkashi ( Painting room ) or if i be too specific it was the room decorated with Frescoes all over it , not an inch left.

Truely it was one of those unexpected things which happened to me on this Rajasthan tour of mine.

Truely and amazing place to stay , if anybody visiting Mandawa i would strongly recommend Heritage Mandawa.

Alwar Bagh | Awesome stay | Best place to stay near Sariska National Park

Looking for a tour whether a week long or a day long one main thing to keep in mind is to think where i would be spending my night. On my latest trip to Bhangarh fort and Sariska National Park same thing was going in my mind, after a long search and enquiring some i finally decided to be staying Alwar Bagh near Sariska National Park. It was the first time i would be staying in this resort but my brother had been there before on a official trip , it was he only who suggested me this resort.

Next thing was to ask for the fare , and thankfully it was the first time when i resorted to online travel portal TRAVELGURU for this , they offered me lesser amount than any other travel agent i asked or even directly asking the Alwar Bagh Resort.

Alwar Bagh Resort

We had booked two Deluxe rooms there and it was the time to check in.

Here , the best part starts which impressed me the most.

We were made to check in to our rooms , but somehow for the first time i was acting bit fussy about the rooms interior , though i have stayed in the very normal and infact being more specific much lesser budget hotels but dont know why i was not impressed by the room which they gave me for first time.

I wont say that room had some problem , it was something which i think i realised that day , i was having some problem with the Rugged look they had given to their furniture , paint of the furniture was done in that way that it looked like and gave an unfinished look.

I called the reception and told my problem , they told me to wait for just 5 minute and let us check the availability of any other room in which they could shift me. They offered me another room and it was a surprise and the most impressive thing for me , they had given me the Super Deluxe Room.

Best Part of staying at Alwar Bagh ...
Best Part of staying at Alwar Bagh …

This new room was double the size of my previous room , previous room dint had a mini bar and sofa but this one had the perfect couch. Previous room had just one window and this one was loaded with 5 windows , all facing towards the Amla farms of resort owner.

amla

It was a much delight for my eyes , watching a farm of Amla , tree’s fully loaded and i would surely accept that plucked some as well as a souvenir.

Owner of Alwar Bagh Resort lives in resort only in their big haveli , early morning Chauhan Family sitting in their open area sipping tea , having conversation with the tourist giving a feel of home away from home , being very courteous and looking after the needs of the guest.

What a surprise it would be when a small kid comes to you and asks you about your stay , where you from ? what you have seen till now in Alwar.

Me and my wife were clicking some pictures of the garden area , suddenly from the back came a labrador dog and one loud kiddish toned voice following him ” Dont get scared , he only loves , he doesnt bite ” .

A small kid coming towards us , said hello and on the next instant he was in my wife’s lap asking her about from whe she came ? Is she Scared of dogs ? Did she went to Bhangarh ? Watched tiger at Sariska ?

He was shooting questions dint even waiting for answers and i was just smiling. Then i asked him what his name ? came the reply K. Aditya Singh Chauhan.

It was a kiddish tone , his accent was not clear so i had to twice or thrice i think. I was not understanding the meaning of K in the name. Then my wife asked him his full name and he replied bit angrily but smiling as well   ” Ufffff Dont you understand in one time , Arre Baba its Kunwar Aditya Singh Chauhan ” .

Then he moved on with his dog after giving a kiss on my wife’s cheek. Though we met him again when we checked out , he was doing drawings sitting on the reception of resort.

We were heading back towards New Delhi , but i would say the gesture of Alwar Bagh staff , the way understood my fussyness towards the room and upgrading my room to Super Deluxe Room and the meeting with Kunwar Aditya Singh Chauhan , were those things which i had experienced for first time , totally impressed with Alwar Bagh.

Though pricing of food is on a bit higher side , but looking at a situation where there is no restaurant or any food joint nearby that pricing seemed bit fine.

I would totally recommend Alwar Bagh Resort if anybody going to Bhangarh fort or Sariska National Park.

Sariska National Park

Sariska National Park | Just pug marks no Tiger, Unlucky Me.

Day 2 of my trip to Bhangarh Fort was starting, I had covered the main destination of my trip the previous day. But I would accept Bhangarh Fort was never the main attraction of the trip, it was later on decided to move there as well, from the starting trip was dedicated towards watching Tiger at Sariska Tiger Reserve or Sariska National Park. Guest Blog | luxembourg | Its tiny, its beautiful, its rich ,and its happening

Currently  I am living with my daughter and my husband as an expat in Luxembourg  since past three years .Though earlier i have lived in UK for more than one year ,the experience of living in this part of Europe is totally different .

During our stay in Luxembourg we have visited many other European cities and countries,I would like to share my experience as a tourist and traveler with you .

Starting with the country I am currently residing is Luxembourg or the Grand duchy of Luxembourg as it is known is founding member of European Union .It is a tiny country sized 51 by 32 miles sharing its border with Germany ,France and Belgium .Whenever we go for a drive we do take our passport along as it just take you a 40 mins drive to cross the border be it France, Germany or Belgium just  40 mins and you are in different country.  Beside sharing border Germany and France also share the status of being official languages .Luxembourg has three official language Luxembourgish, German and french .With 44.5% of its total population being foreign nationals and large number of people commuting daily from the neighbouring countries  its is perfect example of globalism and internationalism .It has world largest per capita  income and one of the richest country in the world (which can be felt while living here) . Nobody would believe , but this small country, though size of it is like a part of my place New Delhi , back in India.

Cant express its beauty in one picture, more would be coming
Cant express its beauty in one picture, more would be coming

Its land locked , its small , yet extremely picturesque and above all its not at all boring. Famous for its castles and case mates, its is a treat for a nature lover with many natural trails for trekking and hiking .Its a vibrant country with events and celebration happening throughout  the year .

India’s every state has its own airport even some major cities are also having their own ,they are busy with many flights connecting them to different parts of world . There is no direct flight to Luxembourg from any other part of the world except some of the  European countries which make the travel time for people like us a bit longer .What  really amuse me that without having direct flights to any other part of world except Europe still it is ranked Europe 5th busiest airport .Some people use it on very regular basis if not daily then deffinately 2 or 3 days a week for their work purpose .It usualy takes no longer than 2 hrs to reach any other European country from here (A delhi -mumbai flight), I personally have used this airport for different destinations its a very small and quite ,offer some fantastic food and coffee joints and you can buy best of European chocolates ,make up perfumes ,accessories .

Gare centrale luxembourg, one of the most impressive building in Luxembourg city
Gare centrale luxembourg, one of the most impressive building in Luxembourg city

Coming to the second part of this small country , and for coming to it this time its the railway network, backbone of any country, we were taught as students how railways was introduced to our country by the Europeans.

Gare centrale or central station of Luxembourg is situated south to the city center and very near by my home. All trains domestic as well as international stops here . It has direct services to its neighboring countries from line 80 , Germany, France and Belgium which further connect it to different part of Europe .

The original railway station was built entirely from timber, and was opened in 1859. The position of the new station on the south bank of the Pétrusse, away from the original built-up area of the city, was on account of Luxembourg’s role as a German Confederation fortress. The first connection to the city proper came in 1861, with the construction of the Passerelle Viaduct.

The old wooden station was replaced by the modern building between 1907 and 1913, at the height of an economic boom, fuelled by iron from the Red Lands , this was the time when Luxembourg started as an economic boom for whole world. The new Station has been designed on MoselleBaroque Revival style that dominates Luxembourg’s major public buildings.

Its imposing Clock Tower can be seen from a considerable distance.

Dont get confused , its Flag of Luxembourg
Dont get confused , its Flag of Luxembourg

Don’t get confused , though i was also surprised when i saw it for first time , it very much look like netherlands which is exactly the same but with a darker blue  French Flag also have same colour but in vertical pattern. Indian flag is also tri colour but with different colours.

In my following blogs i would be writing more on life ,culture places to visit events, seasons, celebrations in and around Luxembourg and also about my trips to different European destination ………
